The Critics’ Circle, asosiasi kritikus tertua di Inggris, telah mengumumkan London Critics’ Circle Film Awards untuk tahun 2021. Penghargaan Film of the Year disabet oleh ‘The Power of the Dog‘ karya sutradara asal Selandia Baru, Jane Campion.
‘The Power of the Dog’ juga membawa pulang pengharaan Director of the Year, Actor of the Year, dan Supporting Actor of the Year, masing-masing untuk Campion, Benedict Cumberbatch dan Kodi Smit-McPhee. Film drama itu juga dibintangi oleh Kirsten Dunst dan Jesse Plemons. Setahun ke belakang, mereka telah berhasil mencuri sorotan di beberapa acara penghargaan. Ada dari Venice Film Festival, Golden Globes, dan nominasi di BAFTA.
Campion sudah pernah dinominasikan untuk Sutradara Terbaik di Oscar tahun 1993 berkat ‘The Piano’. Kini, dengan ‘The Power of the Dog’, Campion berpeluang menjadi wanita ketiga yang memenangkan Sutradara Terbaik, setelah Chloe Zhao untuk ‘Nomadland‘ tahun lalu.
Cumberbatch, Smit-McPhee, dan Dunst semuanya dianggap sudah mengamankan posisi di nominasi Oscar, yang akan diumumkan Selasa, 8 Februari oleh Leslie Jordan dan Traci Ellis Ross. Penghargaan film dari Critics’ Circle membuat posisi mereka untuk menang besar di Oscar semakin kuat.
Pemenang besar lainnya di Critics’ Circle adalah drama Jepang ‘Drive My Car‘ dan aktor Andrew Garfield. ‘Drive My Car’ tidak hanya memenangkan Foreign Language Film of the Year, tetapi juga memenangkan Screenwriter of the Year untuk Ryûsuke Hamaguchi dan Takamasa Oe.
Setelah gagal menang di BAFTA untuk penampilannya di ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!‘, Andrew Garfield memenangkan British/Irish Actor of the Year berkat penampilan gemilangnya di tahun 2021. Garfield tentu saja memiliki tahun yang mengesankan, dengan ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’, ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’, dan bermain kembali sebagai Peter Parker/Spider-Man di ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘.
Tilda Swinton memenangkan British/Irish Actress of the Year, dan Olivia Coleman dan Ruth Negga masing-masing membawa pulang penghargaan Actress of The Year dan Supporting Actress of The Year.
Penghargaan The London Critics’ Circle Film semakin membuktikan bahwa ‘The Power of the Dog’ adalah salah satu film yang harus ditonton saat musim penghargaan ini. Lalu, ajang ini juga menunjukkan bahwa ‘Drive My Car’ turut perlu diikutsertakan ke dalam kategori utama.
